COBALTIAN CALCITE

Mashamba West Mine, Mashamba West, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Estimation : 20000 - 30000 USD

Résultat : 6 985 USD

Calcite is common in the world and in many mines, but hot neon pink calcite is very rare. When such material is found, it tends to be in 2-4 inch specimens, not football-sized specimens. This is a strong, saturated, pink-magenta color that it is beyond compare to a normal "pink" mineral specimen. The natural color is caused by just the right amount of copper content (and perhaps other metals as well) being included in the crystals when they formed. This is a famous and well known habit from this rich copper-cobalt mine but rarely seen in a piece with such large surface area for display. The piece is very 3-dimensional, dramatic and shapely. Most such specimens are simply flat plates, but this stands out for the dimensional quality as well as the sheer size (rather large, for a mineral from this mine in such good condition). Small dark green-black crystals accent the piece for contrast as if pepper was sprinkled upon a neon pink birthday cake, with a few larger and more greenish crystals in crevasses (this is the rare species Kolwezite). With a custom lucite display base. 17 x 11 x 8 cm (6.6 x 4.3 x 3.1in.) and 1,346 g.
