ZIRCON GEM

Sri Lanka

Estimation : 180000 - 250000 USD

Résultat : 63 500 USD

Probably the largest "cinnamon zircon" known. Zircon is one of the oldest known gemstones from history, mentioned in the Bible as hyacinth; and its origin dates to Egyptian times at least. It transliterated to Europe from the Arabic zargun: the Persian zar for "gold", and the gun for "colour." Zircon has high refractive index and dispersion, giving it excellent brilliance and fire-- flashes of color. It is a durable gemstone with a hardness of 7.5 on the Mohs scale. This remarkable stone is 441 carats in size, frontally eye-clean, and has a very thought-out and planned cut with almost no window despite the size. It was optimized by design for both quality and size; whereas normally such record-holders are cut only for size to achieve the bigger carat number. To our knowledge, this is the largest stone of its color (for any location) at the least, and certainly among the largest of all gem zircons of any color. The stone is natural, unheated, and fluorescent yellow in ultraviolet light. Found as rough in Sri Lanka by renowned gem dealer and expert Edward Boehm (grandson of Gubelin lab founder Eduard Gübelin Sr.); and sold by him in the late 1980s to Mike Scott for his collection of "over 100 carat sized" important stones. It was, at the time, thought to be the largest of its type of a natural hue termed "cinnamon zircon." Mike Scott had a passionate love for gemstones and jewellery arts, and therefore also for the raw minerals and gemstone species of crystals that were the source of such beauty in gems and jewels. He prided himself on seeking out unusual and important, often large, examples of the various forms of rough materials used for gems and jewellery; and after his time as CEO at Apple, built a large collection of natural mineral specimens and superlative gemstones. The stone is gorgeous, well cut to emphasize brightness and sparkle while preserving size and balance. When viewed from in front, it looks eye clean as you gaze into the depths of this deep stone
