PARTIAL SLICE OF THE RENOWNED TITUSVILLE, NEW JERSEY IMPACT

Chondrite – H6; Titusville, Hopewell Township, New Jersey (40°18’29"N, 74°50’37"W)

Estimation : 11000 - 15000 USD

There had been only one meteorite recovered in New Jersey. It fell in 1829 and it weighed only 28 grams and was given the name Deal — but as far as New Jersey and extraterrestrial encounters were concerned, 28 grams wasn’t much of one. That changed on May 8, 2023 at 12:14 p.m. when a 2.5 pound meteorite smashed through the roof of a home in Hopewell Township — just 50 miles outside New York City. The meteorite crashed through the roof, bounced off the hardwood floor and ricocheted into the ceiling before falling back to the floor. Suzy Kop, whose father lived in the home, reported the stone was warm when she picked it up. When news of the impact went viral, a media circus ensued. Titusville became among the most widely reported American meteorite impacts of the modern era and now offered is a fine representative sample. Except for the bottom cut edge of the sample, 80% of the rim is covered in fusion crust. As this is a largely metamorphosed chondrite, the few chondrules seen are barely perceptible. The brecciated matrix is accented with veins of impact melt and abundant flakes of nickel-iron suspended throughout. This is a rare opportunity to own a specimen of one of the most widely reported witnessed meteorite falls of the 21st Century. Christie's would like to thank Dr. Alan E. Rubin at the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles for his assistance in preparing this catalogue. 69 x 77 x 3mm (2.75 x 3 x 0.1in.) and 46 grams
