LARGE ADMIRE PALLASITE SLICE WITH EXTRATERRESTRIAL PERIDOT

Pallasite – PMG; Lyon County, Kansas (38° 42' N, 96° 6' W)

Estimation : 15000 - 20000 USD

Admire pallasites are readily identified by large polycrystalline areas that cleaved into highly angular shards — the result of collisions on its parent asteroid. Pallasites form at the mantle-core boundary of an asteroid; chunks of the mantle’s olivine become embedded within the core’s molten metal which then slowly crystallizes. It is only as a result of the asteroid having shattered following a collision with another asteroid that this interior material becomes liberated…and a bit was nudged into an Earth-crossing orbit. The first two masses of Admire pallasites were discovered by a farmer plowing a field in Lyon County, Kansas in 1881. More than a century later, enterprising meteorite hunters returned to the site, and after a lot more plowing (with the use of a metal detector) additional samples of Admire were recovered. The peridot from Admire meteorites can be faceted for jewelry applications. (See next lot.) Gem-quality olivine or peridot (the August birthstone) is found in some pallasites including in the current offering. Pallasites are rare; all of the world’s meteorites weigh less than the world’s annual output of gold and pallasites represent less than 0.2% of all known meteorites. Suspended in the highly-polished iron-nickel matrix from an ancient asteroid’s core, this complete slice is delimited by a rim of the meteorite’s external surface. Modern cutting.
